Minister, APEC energy leaders discuss sustainable growth
Author KOIMA
Green growth, nuclear energy and smart grids were the three major topics at a meeting of APEC energy ministers attended by Minister of Knowledge Economy Choi Kyunghwan on June 19 in Fukui, Japan. The theme was "low-carbon paths to energy security," and discussions centered on the need for global partnerships.

As participating ministers shared their respective countries' strategies, Minister Choi explained Korea's ambitious plan to reduce energy intensity 46 percent by 2030 compared with the level recorded in 2006. He emphasized energy efficiency and the use of cleaner energy sources, and requested the active interest of APEC members in a new Korea-based global institute that will promote green growth. On the sidelines, the Minister met privately with key participants from the United States, Thailand and the International Energy Agency.

Concerns about climate change have sparked considerable interest in nuclear energy among APEC members, some of which have decided to establish their first nuclear power plants. The Minister applauded the plans and said he hoped to see other partners follow suit. Furthermore, participating countries agreed on the potential of smart grid technologies to increase the use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles and nuclear power. Minister Choi outlined Korea's efforts to take the lead in smart grid technology, focusing on its test-bed project on Jeju Island and on "Korea Smart Grid Week" scheduled for November.
